RYA Youth Sailing Scheme (Stage 3&4)

RYA certificates are a significant achievement. Instructors sign off each skill as you complete it. Once completed, your certificate can be of use in other areas of your study such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Youth Sailing Stage 3

During this stage you will learn about rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. On completion you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions. If you successfully complete this course you can progress to level 4 or other courses such as racing or sailing with spinnakers.

Youth Sailing Stage 4

To do this stage you should have all the sailing skills learned at level 3. Usually you would have some sailing time in-between levels 3 and 4 to consolidate your skills rather than fully completing the two courses in the same week: during our Training weeks it is quite possible to complete level 3 and then progress to start some level 4 learning. During the course you will learn more about rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard. At the end of the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring and sail a crewed boat around a triangle in moderate conditions.

Who are these courses for?

You need to have experince equivaelent to stage 2. They are for anyone aged 8 - 16, although at UTSC the younger age limit is at the discretion of the lead Instructor.

How are the courses structured?

All courses will have some theory and lots of practical on-the-water tuition and practice.

What certificates or experience do I need to do these courses?

At Upper Thames, if you do not have a certificate, we will see what stage you are at and teach you at the right level or stage for you. You will then get the certificate that shows what stage you have reached at the end of the course.
